Que ens unim a l’Assemblea General de les Nacions Unides impulsora de la Declaració Universal dels Drets Humans i que ha proclamat l’any 2008 Any internacional del Planeta Terra;
Que fem nostres els objectius de desenvolupament sostenible que promouen un ús intel·ligent dels materials de la Terra;

Artistes participants à l’Art camp 2008

Andorra is a small landlocked country of 468 sq km, located in the eastern Pyrenees mountains and bordered by Spain and France. It is governed by a duumvirate - the President of France and the Bishop of Urgell, Spain are co-princes. The population is predominantly Roman Catholic and its people are currently listed as having the highest human life expectancies in the world, at an average of 83.5 years. Tourism, the mainstay of Andorra's tiny, well-to-do economy, accounts for roughly 80% of GDP.

Ordino, one of Andorra’s seven parishes, hosted forty artists representing 24 countries, at the Colours for the Planet Art Camp, organised by the UNESCO Commission in Andorra. Artists from across Europe joined artists from as far away as Cambodia, Malaysia, Mongolia, the Congo and Greece for ten days - from July 23 to August 03 - to discuss and create artwork related to the impacts of climate change. The Caribbean was represented by Cuban artist Francisco Rivero, Haitian artist Patrick Cauvin both resident in France, and myself. We gave a presentation on the Caribbean, its people and its shared history. My gifts of Grenada nutmegs elegantly wrapped in swatches of batik donated by Chris and Lilo at Art Fabrik, were greatly appreciated, as was the authentic rum punch we served. I had many requests for the recipe.

I have a healthy respect for heights, yet I managed to hike up a narrow mountain trail in the Sorteny National Park to 1800m (5905.5 ft), to have a small picnic lunch with three companions, stopping to drink from the numbingly cold mountain springs along the way. (Andorra has public fresh water fonts everywhere, many of them works of art in their own right, and several reminded me of the Hughes fountain in Grenada.) The other artists along for the hike, disappeared further up the trail to descend and have their picnic in the river gorge below. My legs still have not recovered.

Apart from working on my canvases, I worked with Francisco to complete two works of public art sponsored by an Andorran businessman. On the walls of the underpass, we incorporated existing graffiti into folktale designs, and many adults and children stopped to admire the designs. Photographers from the local daily documented our progress. One of the murals was clearly Grenadian - an abstraction of a Shortkee with a nutmeg. Francisco spoke Castilian, Catalan and French but very little English. My rudimentary Spanish was taxed to the limited, but given that we both spoke the language of art, we understood each other perfectly. We also had the opportunity to each create a tree from waste scrap metal, assisted by two staff from a local welding company. I watched my sculpture evolve in front of me, all the time my mind was working up a proposal to get a similar initiative done in Grenada with the youth and the scrap metal available.

My climate change inspired artwork suggested the effects of sea level rise on Grenada. I had brought with me maps that I purchased from the Ministry of Agriculture. These I glued to the canvases, then applied paper mache and paint to create a tetraptych. The four part painting included Amerindian petroglyphs, and a Shortknee looking on. The low lying areas were depicted in intense red, swallowed by the rising levels of the warm and cold blue greens of the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. At the final exhibition my work was too large to hang, so it laid on the floor which was quite effective. I understand this piece forms part of an exhibition for UNESCO headquarters in France. The deputy mayor of Andorra received us at the City Hall. She paid tribute to the work we were doing at the camp and to the manifesto we had prepared, which we all signed, emphasising the urgent need to preserve our planet, and accepting our responsibility to spread this message to our communities.

Most of the time in Andorra I thought of Grenada, not that I missed my home, but because of my experiences there could easily translate into Grenada, in terms of public art and the opportunity to expand the cultural horizons of our youth and the general public. I look forward to a return visit.

Colors per al planeta, l'Art Camp promogut per la Comissió Nacional de la UNESCO a Andorra marxa a bon ritme i aquests dies els artistes que l'integren treballen a ple rendiment per crear i també parlar del gran repte que marca el canvi climàtic, creant obres que han de servir per despertar la consciència entorn a la integració i a la sensibilitat pel medi ambient.
Un grapat de ferralla ha servit per fer un bosc d'arbres. Molts d´aquests artistes són pintors però en aquest Art Camp també han experimentat amb altres disciplines com ara l´escultura. Un taller per descobrir les possiblitats del reciclatge a partir d´un concepte: l´arbre. I el resultat salta a la vista. Entre aquest bosc s´hi troben representacions de tot tipus creades a partir de qualsevol peça de rebuig. Des d´unes espàtules de cuina, fins a unes claus de taller. N´hi ha de més figuristes. D´altres ens traslladen al minimalisme i al concepte amagat de la visió de l´artista Treballen amb el ferro però també amb la pintura. En aquest taller els colors dónen vida al missatge. La convivència d´aquests artistes i el treball que desenvolupen aquests dies és l´exemple que es vol donar a la societat sobre la integració entre cultures no només amb el diàleg sinó també a través de l´art i les seves manifestacions. Les obres creades aquests dies es posaran a la venda, a partir dels 100 euros per finançar part del passatge de tornada a casa d´aquests artistes.

Introduction

The universal language that the majority of human beings understand best is the language of art, which enriches the lives of all people by means of its multiple forms of expression. Bringing artists from different countries together promotes cooperation and understanding between nations.

One of the most important challenges that we face nowadays, as the peoples of the world, is the increasing migration of an ever more important number of those who escape from hunger, wars and misery, and move to a different part of the world in search of a better life.

This challenge requires an effort of integration and understanding between men and women of different races and religions. Learning to live together notwithstanding the social differences between the locals and the newcomers, making mutual respect a foundation of enrichment of all the cultures involved.

This problem is aggravated by the biggest challenge that affects the whole of Humanity: the climate change and its repercussions which are already starting to be felt by all the inhabitants of the planet and those who are about to inherit it.

The solution inevitably lies in understanding between the peoples of different nations and races, in joined effort to respond to these challenges and eventually find the road to agreement, brotherhood and dialogue so as to face and solve the present situation. For this particular reason the Andorran National Commission for UNESCO has found it opportune to provide a meeting point for the artists capable to share their view of the world through their preferred means of expression.

Objectives

The main objective of the Art camp of Andorra is bringing together around thirty artists coming from 5 continents with the view to promote artistic creation and debate on the importance of the challenge presented by climatic change and all its repercussions on the planetary level as defined by the UNESCO in the framework of the celebration of the Year declared the “International Year of the Planet Earth” (IYPE). The main aim of this year is inducing the whole society to take conscience of the intimate relationship that exists between the Humanity and the Planet Earth. The so-called developed societies presently represent the biggest and fastest “non extraterrestrial factor” that can modify and alter the dynamics of our planet.

From East to West, the colours of the dialogue ...

Among about thirty artists forming part of the group, about twenty will be coming from the countries of Europe nearest to Andorra and will arrive here from Romania representing the Art-camp “Vlaicu Ionescu” which will take place just before ours (the first two weeks of July). Under the name “From East o West, the colours of the dialogue”, this group enters the framework of the campaign of “the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue”. In course of their journey to Andorra they will exhibit their works, created at the Art camp in Romania, in different cities of Europe (Vienna, Venice,…).

In the course of the ten days of the Colours for the Planet, the artists coming from all the continents and gathered in one of the most beautiful parts of our country will work on their paintings and debate various issues that affect communication between peoples and the planetary challenge that climatic change presents. The organisers will provide all the necessary material (canvas, paints, paintbrushes,…)

The rest of the activities will be focused on exchange with the artists of the country on the subject of environment and different humane problems encountered by every artist in his or her country of origin.

Thus, each participant will bring some emblematic examples of her or his culture (cooking recipes, stories and legends, national costumes and traditional music).

Apart from building cultural bridges, the objective of this Art camp is to promote the importance of dialogue between the cultures and civilizations for social cohesion, reconciliation between different cultures and the establishment of a culture of peace. Through their creative attitude, all the artists coming from different backgrounds will contribute to the construction of intercultural bridges between our communities.

The international group of artists will spend around ten days in Andorra working on their paintings, sharing with the others in the spirit of creativity and discovering the values they have in common that help us learn how to live together.

3 works of each artist will be selected to be exhibited in one of the exhibition halls of the country. In consequence, these works will become property of the different institutions that have collaborated in the organization of this Art camp. If the opportunity presents itself, the works of art in question will also be exhibited in the neighbouring countries (France, Spain,...)

Another objective of this Art camp, the one of a more symbolic kind, will be the creation of a Manifest that the participant artists will compose in favour of mutual understanding between all people, whatever their race or faith, while emphasizing the urgent need to act in order to preserve our planet.
The artists will be entrusted with the responsibility to spread its message to their communities.
